Founding of the Company

Founded in 1894 as the T. & A. Baťa Shoe
Company, the business was established by Tomáš Baťa together with his brother Antonín and sister Anna in the Moravian town of Zlín, then part of Austria-Hungary and now in the Czech Republic. Coming from a family of cobblers whose craft spanned generations, the founders built the enterprise on deep-rooted shoemaking
tradition.

Global Industrial Growth

Over the following decade, Baťa established factories in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Brazil, Kenya, Canada, and the United States.

In India, a major plant was opened in Calcutta during the 1930s, marking another important step in the company’s worldwide development.

International Expansion

At the time of Tomáš Baťa’s death, the company had already developed into a substantial enterprise, comprising 1,645 shops, 25 manufacturing operations, and a workforce of 16,560 employees.

In accordance with plans laid down before
his passing, Jan Antonín Baťa carried forward this vision and expanded the business to more than six times its original scale, both within Czechoslovakia and across international markets

During the 1960s, Bata adopted more modern retail concepts, introducing increasingly structured and customer-oriented stores across multiple regions. By 1965, the brand had firmly established itself in Lebanon, becoming a household name associated with dependable school shoes, comfortable everyday footwear, and enduring styles. Ongoing advances in
materials and design further reinforced Bata’s commitment to comfort, quality, and accessibility for customers of all ages.

Continuity, Retail Presence, andCurrent Position

Today, Bata stands as one of Lebanon’s
leading footwear retailers, operating 14 stores across the country. With a sustained commitment to delivering comfort, quality, and innovation in footwear, the brand continues to serve its clients with products shaped by both technology and wearability.

This enduring presence has secured Bata’s place among the most established international footwear brands in Lebanon.
